Duty to God Tracking and Eagle Scout Tracking on Ward Website.

Postby jimbaird » Thu Feb 01, 2007 2:50 pm

Does anyone know if there has been any discussion about being able track Duty to God, Eagle Scout Progress and YW personal progress on the ward websites?

Although there are some discussions going on at the Church level regarding these issues, nothing has been decided as of yet.

I am assuming if we built something in asp.net v3.0 and csharp that was good they might be interested in using it if we donated it to them?

Before getting very deep into code it would be a good time to ask Tom a lot of questions. One of the major concerns is to make the protection of the information multiple layers deep and to include audit and data tracking information.

Since the data is about minors and considered private being able to track who received what data, updated data, and created what data should be considered a core function. It is not just a matter of being able to produce information and put it to paper or a screen but you also need to be able to document who accessed the data (both successfully and unsuccessfully) for the life of the data.

Doing the data part looks to be straight forward but large in scale. Doing the meta data tracking and control looks to be very challenging. Every time I think I have gotten started building the app something in life pops out of the woodwork and stops my efforts cold.ed.

There are some applications available currently. http://www.ymyw.org is one of them. The Church does not endorse any of these products. We are working through some a whole bunch of issues that would enable us to come up with a policy for these types of sites. As soon as I have more direction, I'll pass it along.

We have started using http://etrailtoeagle.com for Duty to God and Scout tracking. Very nice site that is adding features quickly. The Duty to God tracking is free. Scouting adds a nominal per year fee. I was thinking it would be nice for the Church to adopt one of these systems, compensate the contributor, and sanction it's use (or incorporate the domain into it own). That way we all do it the same way.

can we use these websites?

We started to use www.ymyw.org and www.etrailtoeagle.com but were advised that we shouldn't given a letter from the First Presidency dated 13 Dec 2004 about authorised church web sites. It is by far the best option for keeping track of these programs and we would like to use it. Tom, what can you advise at this stage?

There is still no definitive statement on this topic. You can read the exceptionally long thread titled Request a clarification on usage of non-church owned websites. You will see that the most common (but by no means unanimous) interpretation is that this is not a violation of the 13 Dec 2004 letter, so it is a local decision.

Personally, I tend to agree with the sentiments expressed in this post, which Tom concurred with.

No new news to report although new discussions have been sparked with sites like http://www.YouthMaster.org.
