aebrown answered this question (and provided a link to more information) on the Classic Calendar To Be Shutdown At The End of 2011 thread, post #4.
mohhess wrote:It would be nice if we could have the option to have a ward website that tied in with the new calendar/directory and one day, lesson scheduler. For now...we use a blog that has links that go to these places (except lessons. For that we have an html table update monthly by me).
For now, they have some workarounds that allow you to do that.

One is to Deactivate the Classic Calendar and Directory. The effect that this has is that when members click on any directory or calendar link in the classic site, they will automatically be redirected to the new features.

To deactivate the classic calendar or directory, have a stake administrator do the following:
Go to the classic stake and ward website by going to http://units.lds.org.
Sign in with your LDS Account.
On the stake homepage, on the left-hand navigation, click Administrator Options.
Click the green link that says Use New Calendar/Directory.
An options page appears with options to deactivate the classic calendar or directory. Select the following as desired:
--Deactivate Classic Calendar
--Deactivate Classic Directory

Click Save Changes

The other thing that can be done in addition to this, is adding the links to each new feature in the "Web Resources" section of the homepage on the classic website.

Lesson schedules can be added on the old website as well. If you are unable to get your stake administrators to add Priesthood/Relief Society lessons at the stake level, you can also enter your lesson schedule into a "News and Information" item, and check the box to have that item appear on the homepage.

I hope that helps! Then you'll have people in the habit of going to lds.org already, instead of redirecting them to the new site when it comes out.

If you are not the stake authority for this, you can forward these instructions to the correct person and ask them to make the change. Then, you only need to direct people to the classic website. When they click on Calendar or Directory from the classic site, they will automatically be directed to the new features instead of looking at the old ones.
When the old calendar system is deactivated by a stake administrator it does it for every ward in the stake. Before your stake administrator switches to the new calendar system they should make sure all the ward administrators know this is going to happen and are prepared to port the info from the old calendar to the new calendar.
Last year our stake posted a repeating event every day of 2012 in the old calendar system informing members that this calendar was going away on Dec 31, 2011 and they should be using the new calendar system for everything beginning Jan 1, 2012. It seemed to work since there were no cries of lost data when we made the switch.
