Social Network Marking

This is similar to Connor Boyack's "google earth" suggestion.

Basically, you have an account on the scriptures site. Then you can highlight, annotate, and add links into, say, the Ensign, General Conference, etc (including audio/video links).

But, you can also add "friends" to your account. Then, while highlighting, annotating, and linking, you can view the marks of friends who have allowed you to add them to your list.

So now you can have a group of friends or close family "sharing" their scriptures. Kind of like the "Family Bible"

But you have the option of "turning off" the marks of other family members (like google earth).

The Church could also add in special "guest" marks from General Authorities, etc., just as another fun idea. These would be global instead of social options.

This combines the marking with a social aspect.

I know scripture marking can also be very personal, so you would want privacy options as well. Like, "share this mark with friends or don't" etc.

I have spoken with Stewart Foss over at ScriptureTag about similar ideas and I'm hoping to see them materialize at some point.

I'm willing to help any way I can ( PhD in CS).

Thanks!

I've been working on a similar concept, with individual and social scripture tagging and marking groups. I think it has a lot of potential for allowing people to share the scriptures.

This is a great idea, just like the google calendar option to share calendars. An example of this would be:
An insitute teacher has been teaching about a few different topics throughout the book of mormon.
The student, is marking certian passages in his set that, but sometimes misses a remark about a future test question based on the atonement.
The teacher has already marked the all the scriptures on-line about the atonement with their comments that they made in class.
The student then, while studying can see his teacher's notes and marks and get any missing information.

I think we could use some del.icio.us-like functionality in this as well, which comprises some of what you've suggested. I've done the same in Quoty, where users can save quotes, search by tags, search through their own, view other peoples', and save other peoples' to their own.

Similarly, one could create a portal for scripture annotations (and other resources) where they can be viewed by the public at large, shared among friends/family (or anonymous site visitors), and pooled together so that when somebody is reading the scriptures they can enable the "community" layer (a la google earth functionality) and view what other people have said about the scripture, what talk they've referenced, what experience they've shared, etc.

Given the openness of the community input and potential for negative/anti content, I doubt the Church could sponsor functionality this broad without heavily moderating the submissions, which I see as unlikely.

Perhaps, then, this is another case where an official scripture API would come in handy allowing a third party developer to take it on.

That may be a great first step. Excellent ideas!
