Tax statement error

I got an email today saying my tax receipt is available. I see an error in my tax receipt compared to the YTD donations received. There is a random donation in May mission from the tax receipt. If it was at the beginning of the year or at the end of the year that would be explainable. If anyone at LDS HQ is interested in verifying this error let me know :)

What was the donation for? The YTD donations statement includes all donations, but the Official Tax Statement excludes any non-charitable donations. The most obvious reason is for payments to the "Other" category, such as fundraisers, youth camps, temple trips, etc.

It can be tricky to be sure simply by looking at the YTD donations statement, because some charitable donations will appear in the Other column (such as Temple Patron Assistance or Perpetual Education Fund), and those are indistinguishable on that statement from non-charitable donations such as those I mentioned above. But if the donation in question appears in the Other column on the YTD statement, there's a pretty good chance that it was excluded because it was categorized as non-charitable.

If you think that that particular donation was for a charitable category, but it doesn't appear on your tax statement, then you should contact your ward clerk. He can look up exactly how the donation was categorized. Perhaps one of the clerks incorrectly categorized it; if so, the ward clerk can correct that.

Ah... maybe it was recorded in error. The details for the donation say "Young Mens - Budget" I don't remember giving or being asked to give to the YM's budget. I take it that is considered non-charitable?

Yes, Budget "donations" are non-charitable. They typically are only used to return leftover funds after an advance.

So it sounds likely that the clerk applied the wrong category to that donation.
