This just doesn't resonate with me. Maybe your Bishop likes to do things this way but the next Bishop may have absolutely no interest in having PowerPoint-heavy meetings all the time. (Makes me wonder if your Bishop's professional work involves a lot of this stuff. Otherwise, I don't think the average member expects it.) For many of us, creating such presentations would be far more time-consuming than it's worth, making it specifically impractical. For some (perhaps your ward's leaders) it's easy, but the FM Group isn't going to want to invest in such a project if, a year or two later, it will sit idle week after week.

If this is so important, I'll point out that the last time I was a Sam's Club I saw a remarkably small and affordable projector by LG which seemed (at a glance) to present a nice picture. There must be other, similar items on the market. Maybe the Bishop could just buy one for himself rather than wait for the FM Group. And he could easily take it home and use it for anything else in his media-heavy routine.

There are many, many reasons to have a display solution for all to see other than for a Bishop to have a powerpoint. In my experience meetings like this rarely use powerpoints, but still provide great benefits. Online Leadership training, reviewing leadership training videos, agenda, notes, etc...

the major benefit is not everyone looking at their own devices trying to retrieve data on their own then being distracted by a notification or a text and losing parts of the meeting.

As has been said a couple of times a projector seems a pretty decent alternative.

Quite literally everyone is working off the same page. I could see some leaders using that effectively.

I don't care for projectors. They do not have speakers (or good ones, anyway). They typically require dim ambient lighting. They require a certain amount of unobstructed distance between them and the wall. And, of course, they require a flat white surface.

I would much rather have an LCD/LED TV on the wall of my stake president's office, rather than the small white board that is currently there. As the stake clerk, I could easily connect my laptop to the TV using an HDMI cable. Then I can display whatever the presidency wants to see, such as the meeting agenda, the LCR web site reports, e-mail messages, documents, spreadsheets, or slideshows.

I don't disagree, but we don't even have enough Flat-Panel monitors to accommodate anyone other than the 1st ward attending at that meetinghouse to roll in for meetings like these. So we're left with a Projector as the best alternative that might work within the system.

I don't fall into the 'too expensive crowd' There are too many examples over the years where cost didn't seem to matter if the results were there for Church leaders (satellite dishes? iPad's, etc...)

John, I agree. Several visiting authorities have requested expensive items that we didn't have for stake conference. We usually make those purchases after the conference is over, so we will be ready for the next visiting authority's request.

That's the story that really saddens me. They could have at least taped a note to the thing telling the Bishop this was unauthorized and they would be removing it. I mean, the FM guys don't show up one day and just happen to have all the material they need to remove such an item and patch up the holes. They knew, in advance, that they planned to do it. This iron-fisted management style just widens the gulf between the FM Group and the members who are trying to do their best, even when they don't quite understand the organization. Who paid for the TV that the FM Group confiscated? Was it out of the Bishop's own pocket?

They didn't go so far as to confiscate the TV (though technically they were within their right to) I don't know what the alternative is at this point.

This is interesting. We had a similar situation where the 70 wanted a lapel microphone and we handed him that corded thing, he wasn't too impressed, but I assured him that the FM group told us that all visiting authorities know what is in place in meetinghouses and are supposed to use them.

Additionally, I was asked to come help out my FM when a gathering of mission presidents was in town. Those GA's traveled with a technology packet that included projectors, appleTV, wifi all hdmi and pretty sweet. I had to jump out of bed in the early AM to help my FM out. We had to integrate with the hotel system (the church doesn't pay for that service in hotel rooms apparently and rely on FM to bring microphones, etc...).

I would never encourage my SP to purchase anything beyond what FM is willing to pay for or doesn't come in the standard meetinghouse package. It is important that we fund things as the handbook and policy dictates. And, yes, I have pointed a visiting area authority 70 to a policy prohibiting the purchase of something he asked for.

The real need here is a council room where the ward council can fit. Units that do not share a meetinghouse with other units can find plenty of rooms that would work; but due to busy schedules, these rooms may not be availible when needed if two wards share a meetinghouse and certainly aren't availible to meet the needs of all wards in meetinghouses shared by 3 or more units. Perhaps the bishops offices for new meetinghouse designs should be a little larger than has been typical, but the bishop also needs to be able to conduct very private one-on-one interviews and a larger room might not serve as well at creating the proper atmosphere.

Perhaps a different cart design would help.
