We all klnow who the prophet , and should know the 12, but I went to find someone who was visiting my ward who's from the 8th quorum of 70, and found it dificult to find, and to know where he fitted into the leadership. A web site that enabled me to search a name of our current leaders, and find a little about them, their current assignments, and even their level of leadership . For instance this man was designated "Elder", from the 70, he wasn't in the area presidency, but he presided at my meeting....over the stake president who was also there.....

There is some information in the Church Directory of Organizations and Leaders as to what Seventies are assigned to, and which quorums the belong to. You can read more about it here: https://tech.lds.org/wiki/index.php/CDOL.

That looks like it may do the trick, but being a restricted applicaiton not all the members can see it. Even as a bishopric counsellor I'm not authourised to see this information,. and it may well be that there is personel information that shouldn;t be made public.

Because the official Church site does not include any information after the Presidency of the Seventy, you will have to go to less official sources for this information.

The LDS Church News, which actually is an authorized news web site of the Church, has a link that lists leaders, including Area Seventies. For the First and Second Quorums of the Seventy, you will see photos and a brief biography for each one.

For the Third through Eighth Quorums, you will only see a list of names. A member of one of these quorums only functions within his individual area, and they are listed by area. The Pacific Area, for example, currently has 12 area seventies. Any of those twelve area seventies who visited would have presided at stake conference or other meetings.

If you search at the LDS Church News site, you can find articles from conference where these Area Seventies were sustained, and occasionally glean biographical info from those articles.

There are a few other totally unofficial sites that have some biographical information.

You should also be able to find out when any member of one of the quorums of the seventy was sustained in General Conference by searching the Ensign and the sustaining of officers. That won't provide the list of the quorum membership, but you can verify that the presiding authority was sustained in General Conference.

I think the point of the original post was that there should be an official source for getting this information, as it is important for general membership to be able to look up who their leaders are at any given time. If you can't find out off the church who your leaders are, how are you supposed to raise your hand and sustain them? And sustaining them should involve following the counsel, not just raising your hand. How can you follow their counsel if you don't know what it is? And how can you look up what it is if you can't even look up who they are? It is good that community resources fill the shortcomings of official sources, but the church has always encouraged us to turn to official sources as a primary source for information and use other sources selectively to supplement learning under the direction of the spirit. It seems that something as critical as knowing who your leaders are is a message that should come from the top, and should be easily accessible from an up to date official source.

My post, #4 in this thread, explained that the LDS Church News is an authorized news web site of the Church. That makes it an official source, and it is available nearly 24/7 for those who wish to look up this information.

The Ensign, mentioned by dmaynes, is also an official source of information.

And if the person conducting the meeting is following proper protocol, he should announce the name of the area seventy and mention that he is presiding at the meeting.

Leaders & ideas

In the 1800's a ward level sister said to the Church President, 'We need an after school program'

He said 'Start the Primary' so she did.

Today, how does one get a new idea thru the system?? I spoke with several General Primary leaders and they all said 'Sharing Time should include physical activities' It has caught on in Salt Lake county cause they have enough General Board members OK' ing things. They fold up the chairs and do things like weekday Primary did.

I ran several other ideas past a staff guy. He said "Do you have any friends that are General Authorities??

This forum has great possibilities

Although many ideas do eventually make their way to the general offices of the Church, they don't need to begin there. I'd suggest that you discuss your ideas with your ward and stake leadership. Some very good stake ideas come from the wards. Some ideas used in different areas come from the stakes in those coordinating councils. And when an Area Seventy sees a stake doing a really good thing, it gets elevated.

Personally, I'd be hesitant to bypass my own local leadership.

We'd like to think so, but probably not in the way you're hoping for. To start with, this forum deals primarily (no pun intended) with technology. Which is to say, the General Authorities and their office staff do not read what happens here. (At least as far as I know.)
