Scripture marking & notating

Postby sterlingb » Sun Nov 30, 2008 1:38 pm

I scanned the forum for a thread about this, but didn't see one, so here it is. I'd like to see a feature in the online scriptures that tracks (via my ID) scripture markings and allows me to make notations. It would become a permanent archive.

I haven't really thought the idea through, but there's so many things it could do, with variations in how people prefer to mark (i.e. colors can be mere highlights, or they could represent topics).

Having a mobile version that ties directly to the online scriptures would then enable people to view those same highlights in church meetings, annotate & supplement, then synchronize.

Edit: Also, to clarify, it would enable one to add continuing notations across verses and chapters (i.e. I could simultaneously have a notation solely on 1 Nephi 7:2 and a separate notation on 1 Nephi 7:1-3).

I have heard this idea float around quite a few times, but I am also having trouble finding very many threads dealing with it.

The following thread discusses a wiki page that has been set up where bugs and suggestions can be logged: http://tech.lds.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2269

I second this idea. This has long been a desire of mine. I have used tons of mobile programs (many of which cost a lot of money), but I would prefer to use the church's system. I'm sure that could end up being a lot of data... and the responsibility the church would have to take on to make sure there were back-ups of the data is something that they may not want to do.

Another good option would be a firefox extension It wouldn't work for mobile devices (at least not yet), but it would be a great start.

You can, of course do this already with programs like Diigo.com and other web annotators. They just aren't quite to the point where they work for me yet.

I'm glad I found this thread! I've actually started developing something similar for my own personal use. If there's enough interest, though, I might be persuaded to host it for others to use as well. I'll put up a simple beta once I get to that point, and you guys can let me know what you think. For now, feel free to list desired features here.

In addition to the threads linked to in this current thread, here is another link of someone starting a project on their own at the end of the thread:

Jeff -
I'll let you know. It'll probably be a couple of weeks at least before I have anything to show, but the more people want to check it out the better.

Marking Scriptures Online

Postby aaron.mosiah.curtis » Sat Jan 17, 2009 8:06 am

I've had some success with using Diigo (http://www.diigo.com') as a highlighting and note-taking feature on scriptures.lds.org. It's not necessarily available offline, but you can view your highlights and notes with a browser add-in or bookmarklet from any computer.

I've been kicking this idea around for the past year now, and for the past few months I've been working on turning it into an actual application to use.

I'm probably a few months away still from it being usable, but I'll be beta testing it in a few weeks (if anybody is interested, hint hint). The website is http://www.myldsnotebook.com.

One of my main goals with the project is to first create an iPhone-optimized version of the site, and later a full-blown iPhone application, as that will make it much more useful than being computer-based only.

Oh, and did I mention it will have a social aspect to it to enrich your personal scripture study? :D

And most of all you can share your notes with others!
