We recently received new computers in our FHC. Most of the transition was quite simple and painless.

The one real pain was connecting the Canon 300 scanner and getting it to work. The scanner has a SCSI-2 connection and all the PC's don't.

I was able to get it work using a RATOC USB/SCSI adaptor after contacting http://www.scsiproshop.com they have drivers for the RATOC that will work with Win 7.

I don't know how many other FHC's have this issue, but there is a solution available.

Our Digital Imaging System originally came with an hp Compaq 530s, which included a PCI SCSI card with a full-size bracket. When that computer was replaced with an Optiplex 740, the full-size bracket didn't fit, so I called Family History Center Support. They sent us a RATOC USB-SCSI adapter, which works fine with Windows XP.

I hope it works in the future if that Optiplex 740 gets replaced with a Windows 7 PC.

I don't remember what scanner we have, but I just moved the card from the old machine to the new one. I had to poke around a bit for drivers - ended up using drivers for a slightly newer model, but I got it working.

I downloaded and installed the Windows 7 driver for the RATOC adapter, but I don't know where to find a Windows 7 driver for the Canon MS300 microfilm scanner.

We are using Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.

Start by checking the scanner in Device Manager. To get to Device Manager:
Click Start.
Right-click Computer (Win XP: My Computer).
Select Properties.
Select the Device Manager link on the left (Win XP: Select the Hardware tab, then the Device Manager button).
The Canon scanner should show up under Imaging Devices. If it is under Other Devices, the correct drivers have not been installed. If you are using the Canon MS 300, you must also check the status of your SCSI device (either an Adaptec SCSI card, or a RATOC* cable) and make sure it is recognized and installed.

If you are using the Windows 7 ver 2.0 image (see Finding the Family History Center Desktop Image version number (53232) ), you can do the following to install the needed drivers for the Canon MS 300 or 300 II scanner:

Note: If you have a Canon MS 300, you will need to ensure that your SCSI device is installed BEFORE installing the scanner.

Open My Computer (Windows Explorer) and navigate to:

C:\DIS Drivers\Scanners\Microfilm-fiche\Canon\c300ii

(Note: The c300ii drivers will work for BOTH the Canon MS 300 and MS 300 II scanners.)

Run BOTH the Setup.exe files located in the All Drivers and TWAIN directories.

Next, go to Device Manager (see the steps above), right-click on the Canon MS 300 scanner, and choose Properties. Select the driver tab, and choose update driver. Select the option to choose your own driver, and navigate to:

C:\DIS Drivers\Scanners\Microfilm-fiche\Canon\c300ii\Win 7\32bit\INF or
C:\Support\FamilySearch\DIS Drivers\Scanners\Microfilm-fiche

Then click OK so the inf file there can be installed.

Open XnView, choose File, select TWAIN source, and then select the Canon MS 300. Click File and Acquire, and you should be able to scan.

*The RATOC (U2SCX) SCSI to USB cable can be installed on the Windows 7 ver. 2.0 computers by doing the following:
Make sure the Canon MS 300 scanner is turned on before the computer is started up. If it was not, leave the scanner turned on, and restart the computer.
Log in as an administrator.
Click Start, then Computer.
Double-click the C: drive.
Double-click the DIS Drivers folder.
Double-click the Ratoc Cable folder.
Double-click the U2SCX_64 file to run it.
If you see a screen with odd characters, just give it a few seconds, and it should continue automatically. If it does not, and you are prompted to choose Yes or No, select No.
Follow the prompts to continue the install.
When the install is complete, next you will need to install the Canon drivers (go to step 1 under: "...do the following to install the needed drivers for the Canon MS 300 or 300 II scanner:" above.)

And if you can't find the Canon drivers, they can be downloaded from the Canon support website.

I was able to get our Canon MS300 working with Windows 7. I downloaded the RATOC driver using the product key that came with the adapter/cable, and I downloaded the Windows 7-compatible drivers for the MS300 from Canon.

I can use XnView to acquire scans from either the Canon MS300 or the Lexmark MX511, but I can only use Windows Fax and Scan with the MX511. Not sure why it can't see the MS300 as a scanner. It is listed as an imaging device in Device Manager.

I guess it is now time to toss the Canon LiDE 30 flabed scanner.

There are two common types of drivers: ISIS and TWAIN. From what I can tell, Windows Fax and Scan needs TWAIN.

I have a Canon MS 300 microfilm scanner and was having issues installing it with Windows 7. I was able to get it working by using the driver and Capture Perfect software that Canon has for the MS 300ii on Canon's Europe site at:

I am using it with an Adaptec 2940AU SCSI card on a Dell Optiplex 760.

I looked for the DIS location on our computers and could not find it.
I just recently did the upgrade to windows 7 on these computers.
Any ideas?
