Using Technology for Family Scripture Study

#1

Post by mattfarley »

Wanted to share this awesome setup we have for Family Scripture Study.

All we have to do is say out loud: "Alexa, tell Jarvis to start family scripture study"

And our home automation system will:

1) Turn on the TV and tune to the correct input
2) Adjust the volume on the soundbar
3) Load lds.org on the TV (web browser)
4) Browse to the next chapter (remembers which chapter we did last time)
5) Start the audio on the webpage (reads the chapter out loud)
6) Presses the down arrow key every few seconds to keep the visual page in sync with audio
7) Detects no audio at the end (end of chapter) and closes the browser

Nice! How well does the scrolling stay in sync with the audio?

It's not that fancy actually... After much trial and error, I found that a down arrow press every 3.x seconds manages to stay in sync with the narrator most of the time. So the script automates those down arrow presses.

If the page ever scrolls too far or too short, we can manually keypress with the remote control.

I hate to break it to you, Matt, but that's pretty fancy, and your initial post earned you permanent membership in the geek club... ;) :ugeek:

I have a project I was working on that's currently on a back burner, that scrolls one verse at a time when the up/down arrow keys are pressed (also switches which columns move when pressing left and right):

If anyone has taken the time to record in a database each verse's start time in the audio file for each chapter, you could have it advance to the next verse using a similar system, when the audio hits the next verse's start time. I will probably end up doing that at some point if nobody beats me to it (maybe a chapter a day).
