As a previous ward fiance clerk I can testify that there was an increase in Fast Donations when we sent people out. I say active members who usually did not donate to fast donate when someone was at their door even if it was just a little cash that they had in their pockets. I also say inactive members donate month after month who other wise would not have.
Part of our priesthood responsibilities is to "Watch over the Church" and collecting fast offerings in order to help people in need is just one way to do this.
