Number of Classes doesn't consider events

#1

Post by mevans »

I'm scheduling an optional course. I put in that I have 8 classes. One of the Sundays in the following 8 Sundays is Stake Conference, which is an event. The scheduler didn't take this into account and therefore only scheduled the class to occur for 7 classes.

I would have expected it to see I had an event on one of the next 8 Sundays and scheduled 8 class periods.

Were you doing this through a mobile app or your computer? Thanks.

Mobile App? I want one for lesson schedules, but that doesn't exist unless there's something I'm not aware of.

If you're asking if I was using a mobile device browser or a computer browser, the answer is desktop. However, based on what I observed, this isn't a browser issue. It's a programming logic issue.

In case I didn't explain it well enough, try this:
  • Create an event, such as Stake Conference on July 29.
  • Schedule a new class to start on July 15 with 8 sessions.
  • Observe the behavior.
You will see the following classes scheduled:
  • July 15 (Class 1)
  • July 22 (Class 2)
  • July 29 (Stake Conference - no class scheduled)
  • August 5 (Class 3)
  • August 12 (Class 4)
  • August 19 (Class 5)
  • August 26 (Class 6)
  • September 2 (Class 7)
The 8th class was not scheduled. I had to tell it to schedule 9 classes to get my 8 classes.

BTW, I think the church doesn't schedule stake conferences in July; the above example is for illustrative purposes only.

Class Scheduler issue

#4

Post by jrblosil »

Hi,

There is even a worse issue with the scheduler.

I am looking at the Sunday School class schedule and I wanted to add General Conference as an event. What happens is that that class goes away and is replaced by the General Conference event without pushing the rest of the year schedule back a week.

Now there are a number of possible options to make up or not make up a class. But, the more common scenario is that for stake conference, ward conference and general conference, you would just expect the remaining schedule to move back a week. If I want to add back that lost lesson, I either have to add it in December, or I have to reschedule every remaining class lesson back a week one at a time. This is not a proper solution and the tool would not be used if it were that cumbersome.

This is the current programming functionality. See the Adding Events article for a description/explanation and a work-around.

To get this behavior the event must be created before the class is added.

Discussions around the relationship of classes and events have been discussed in these threads, and there probably are others:
Events might not affect all classes
request new feature: third option when adding an event
Incorporate calendar events
