10 minute LDS Tools training!

A recent call to the high council over technology has landed me with an assignment to give a 10-minute LDS Tools app training in each ward conference. I plan on training a few of those minutes on the calendar portion.

Anything else I should consider covering in my training?

Subscriptions. How the subscriptions section of the calendar on lds.org limits what can be seen in lds tools.
Have you searched the Wiki?
Try using a Google search by adding "site:tech.lds.org/wiki" to the search criteria.

That's an excellent suggested and was already on my list to discuss differences between Viewing certain calendars and Subscribing to them. I also discovered that you can edit subscriptions now directly in LDS Tools which is nice.

If possible, make sure that people understand that they need to reserve specific rooms when they create events if they want to use the church building. I can't tell you how many times people fail to reserve specific rooms and someone else comes in and does say what rooms they want. Both groups show up and are frustrated that the calendar "double booked" the same resource.

Well, that brings up to the question of the role of the people being trained. I'm assuming LDS Tools, for members or perhaps leaders.

It might be worth pointing out that most people can't see events in other wards, and certainly not other stakes - even if they share a building. So just because nothing shows in LDS Tools, that doesn't mean the building is available for use.

I would think that should be a key training point. If you need the building, calendar it and reserve the room(s). Don't just walk in and think you will be able to use it because you do not see an activity on your calendar at LDS.org or LDS Tools.

That's not entirely true. I double checked what I can see on my stake calendar since I recently moved and I'm in a new stake. You can see what is on a ward calendar if only if they select the location as being a building in the stake. You need to make sure that the location (building) is selected on the left hand side. When you select "View event details & location" you can see what ward reserved the building along with their specific ward calendar it is on.

It is true you can't see the entire calendar, but you can see enough to know if someone is at the building.

But you are talking about the website. This thread is about the LDS Tools app. There is no equivalent of the location selection in the app. russellhltn's statement was specifically about looking in the LDS Tools app.

It might be worth noting that the Stake Clerk is over technology and the Stake should be using the prescribed plan for supporting technology by calling a Stake Technology Specialist with additional assistant technology specialists as needed. There is SO MUCH training related to this calling that you, by nature of your calling, have no access to. It also tends to de-value the area of technology, in my experience, by removing it one-layer in the organization. For example. The high councilor is not over the Young Men org, the Young Women org, the Stake SS, all who are actively utilizing technology in the stake. I just don't see how it can effectively be run from a single high councilor position.

Point well taken. However, in my case I have been serving as a stake technology specialist and continue to have that calling as well as serving on the high council over training. They kept me in the stake technology specialist calling for the very fact that they knew I need special access to certain technology items to be able to "fix" and "teach" both.

So far I've done three ward conference trainings on LDS Tools and it's going well. More training to come throughout the year, according to the stake president.
