IP-based geocoding of limited value

Postby aclawson » Sun Sep 16, 2012 10:11 am

Under the "maps highlights" section of the lds.org announcement we read

"If you're traveling, you can see what Church facilities are nearby your location. The map will gather information from your IP address to determine your location and show all Church facilities nearby."

I frequently find such location awareness to be completely and hopelessly incorrect. I am frequently identified as being hundreds of miles away from where I actually am, both when I am at home and on the road. On mobile devices (laptops and tablets as well as smartphones) it would be much more convenient to locate via coarse or fine services (wifi and gps, respectively) than IP. Is there going to be an easy way of doing this?
