We'd like to grant access to our stake's online directory to our mission president. Is this possible, given that his records are still in his home unit?

This is a common problem and has been addressed many times. I've posted a few links, but some simple searching might find more descriptive posts. In the classic website, this was referred to as non-resident members, and in MLS it's out-of-unit members, so some good key words to search for. It is a common problem addressed in YSA wards where all the leadership is out-of-unit, but obviously one resident wards deal with as well. Hope these help.

Thanks. So what it sounds like is that I'll get our stake clerk to add the mission president to MLS as an out-of-stake member. Then we'll go from there...

Keep in mind that when members agree to display their information in the directory, they are essentially agreeing to have their information visible to their stake members (See the "What is this?" link in your household's profile). They are not agreeing to having their information available to members outside their stake.

Out-of-unit ecclesiastical leaders are given access to the units they are called to serve in BECAUSE they are given ecclesiastical authority for that unit.

Perhaps members of your stake would agree to give their information to the Mission President, but the Directory application is designed to follow the correct lines of authority when granting access, so be careful and thoughtful when circumventing the design of the application.
