Email lists are different

The old website allows me to send an email to ward members. The new one doesn't but I can view a list of email addresses in a spreadsheet. And the lists are different. Does anyone know why the email address lists are different between the old and new websites?

When you refer to viewing "a list of email addresses in a spreadsheet" on the new site, what are you referring to? Are you choosing Export Households from the new Directory?

If so, then what you are looking at is a CSV file that contains all the households in the ward, one per row. The individual email addresses are in different columns (one for the head of household, one for the spouse, and one for each child). The new Directory takes its email addresses from MLS (or individuals or clerks can update the addresses on the lds.org Directory, which will then update MLS).

But the broadcast feature on the classic LUWS sent email to each individual that was registered on the site. It took the email address from the profile they created when they registered for the site (or subsequently updated). So those email addresses may be rather out of date. If the member never registered for the site, then it uses the email address from MLS.

The rules for which members to include are also somewhat different. On the classic LUWS site, a website administrator could disable a registered user, which would cause them to be excluded from the email broadcast. On the new Directory, a head of household may choose to hide his or her household, or individual email addresses may be hidden. If you are a clerk or leader, when you export households you can choose whether or not you want to include those details for people who chose to hide them. If you are not a clerk or leader, you simply won't see any of those people.
