Approve photos for newly moved in members

Yesterday I moved in records for a new family. After they were moved in, I looked at their entry in the online directory. I could see that some of the family members had photos, but the photo wasn't showing up yet (you get a placeholder that shows it's trying to show an image, but it's not there). I've seen this happen sometimes, but the images seem to eventually appear. Later on in the day, I saw one of the family member's pictures, but the others still had the placeholder.

This morning I went to the directory and saw I had new photos to approve. And whose photos were they...the photos for the members of this family.

This seemed like strange behavior. I wouldn't think I need to approve photos of new records moved into the ward. It doesn't seem like there have been any updates to the Directory in a long time. As I thought about it, maybe the family had uploaded some photos and they've been waiting in the queue (who knows for how long) for the previous ward to approve and they hadn't been approved yet? That might explain the strange behavior I saw of the placeholder graphic. Lately I've observed that if there's a photo associated with a new record that I see it immediately. I think in the past there may have been a lag for a nightly batch job. Maybe there's still a nightly job that moves over photos pending approval?

I would bet this guess is right. I've moved in multiple records with existing photos and they've shown up right away. If you want to go the "extra mile" you could email the clerk of the old ward and give him a "heads-up" about the photo feature (and confirm your suspicion at the same time).
