I have a few names that are stray out of order in directory, as in I have one J name, Jones, that leads off our list.

In those few cases where there are individuals in our ward where their name appears randomly out of order it is because the Directory places their name based on their preferred name. In all cases in our ward it is a sister who prefers her maiden name yet her name of record is her married name and she is the head of household. So in one example the preferred surname is "Kn _ _" but the name of record is "He_ _ _ _ _ _ _". The preferred surname is placed in the appropriate alphabetical order for the H surnames but causes the H surname list to be split and her preferred K surname placed at the proper alphabetical location for her H surname of record.

If you click on a name that appears to be randomly placed in the Directory you may see that the household name (surname of record) is out of order but the preferred name for the head of household is probably in the correct alphabetical order for the Directory.

The cases I've seen appears to be because the households are sorted by household name, but the letters are triggered upon finding a changing individual last name.

So if Sister Smith married Brother Jones, but kept her maiden name, you'll find a stray "S" in the "J" section.
