In trying to simply view my calendar, it appears to be obscured by a long list of subscriptions and locations. How can I simply view a full screen sort of version of the calendar?

Are you seeing something like the screen shots shown in Calendar View Distorted with New Update? If so, that's a problem with Internet Explorer 8 and earlier. You'll need to use a different browser.
