On a more serious note, all adult meetings should end five minutes early so the children are not roaming the halls or playing in the cultural hall.

Can you provide a source for this information? It appears to be a local practice since our stake does not practice this nor can I find this in any of the handbooks or other official instructions.

Policy here is that meetings should end on time so that the adults can pick up their children, who are not released until a parent comes to get them.

In the odd chance a child escaped and made it to the cultural hall, he or she probably would be asked to comment on the lesson being taught, or give the closing prayer.

There was always a red light on the pulpit in the stake where I grew up in the 70's & 80's. (California bay area) . This was such a simple solution to an ongoing problem, that I can't imagine why they aren't used everywhere. I have never seen one on the pulpit since, and believe that is a sad thing.
The fastest thing to drive the spirit away is when the bishopric, following speaker/s, and congregation realize that a speaker is going far over their allotted time.
A inconspicuous little light that the bishopric can use to give a friendly reminder to wrap up the talk...... I can't think of why they went away.
Having the bishopric member stand up to remind them, or have a family member come all the way up to the stand to escort an aging parent away from the pulpit seems far worse to me.

I sustain the red light coming back!

It’s a joy to be here with you and to witness this great historic meeting facility. I enjoyed President Hinckley’s comments regarding the walnut from which this pulpit is made. The Tabernacle pulpit had both a red light and an amber light to assist the speaker with his time.

As we get older, our eyesight usually isn’t as sharp as it used to be. The amber light would come on, and if you didn’t pay attention to that, the red light would start to blink. Brother LeGrand Richards, when the light was first installed, said, “Someone’s put a silly light up here.” He said, “I’ll just put my hand over it.” There isn’t a light here today, so I don’t know when I will end.

Podium Timer Pro (for iOS) is what you want.

It's not free, and recent updates appear to have broken it (based on reviews). I haven't used it myself.

It appears to require an iPad and iPhone, but maybe two iPhones would work.
