Actually, with regards to Android, it is very easy to install alternate app stores. The Amazon Appstore can be installed on any Android device which hasn't been deliberately restricted by the carrier (only a few AT&T phones and the Kindle Fire are locked down like this). And the Amazon Appstore isn't the only third-party appstore. On my first Android tablet, I had about four different app stores.

The iPhone, however, is a completely different story.
