Connecting iPad to TV

My name is Bruce Hammond, my wife and I are serving as MLS missionaries in the Fresno CA mission. We were showing one of the Bible videos in a less active members home. Was using my older IPad and the member said the newer ones can connect to back of TV through adapter that connects to their HDMI cable and/or I could bring my own cable. He said you can also buy Apple TV box and connect remotely to their TV but you would need to know their Wifi password. We go into many people's homes and he said the use of HDMI adapter is less expensive and perhaps is best option. Thinking seriously of buying newer IPad (9.7 inch) and getting HDMI adapter. Do you have any other recommendations?
