Gospel Library on Firefox OS

#1

Post by blittle »

Mozilla is developing Firefox OS to target emerging markets with low cost phones. I think that the Gospel Library app would be an invaluable app for members around the world in low cost markets (assuming the mobile OS actually takes off). Would it be beneficial for me and some other devs to start experimenting and prototyping a Gospel Library app for Firefox OS?

There's a Utah-based Mozilla community with a couple of people interested in developing an LDS scriptures app. Join us on Mozilla's IRC server in #mozillautah and ping me (gueroJeff) or Garrett (garrettn) so we can coordinate an effort.

One thing that we really need to understand is the availability for use to use the scriptures in a Firefox OS app like this (licensing issues, etc.). Could a moderator comment on that please?

There is an API for third-party apps to access the scriptures as described in the wiki article Third-party API for gospel content. However, to become a real Gospel Library app like those on iOS, Android, and Windows 8, you would definitely want to hook into the APIs that allow syncing of annotations with LDS.org. That requires the use of LDS Account authentication, which is only available to official Church applications. Official applications can only be developed under the direction of Church employees, but with that direction, much of the work can be done by volunteers.

See this post, which is in the middle of a discussion of how the Windows 8 version of Gospel Library evolved from a totally volunteer effort into an official app.
