Re: Meetinghouse Internet Problems

But how old is 'too old'? Ten-year-old cabling is going to be substandard anywhere now, and the age could also mean electrical impedance issues with throughput, newer cabling, even three to five years after the last install, is going to make a world of difference, just be sure the cable purchased is...

Re: Meetinghouse Internet Problems

While we have very good bandwidth, until the cabling was replaced even we had major problems. Once the CAT 5 cabling was replaced with stuff that gave us 66 mbps throughput, not expensive but swapping that for what anyone has is going to make a lot of difference. Check where the WAPs are too, one er...

Re: Meetinghouse Internet Problems

Last year's work b Meetinghouse Tech regarding site filtering made the diference for me, even with having very good bandwidth and top level CAT 5 cabling. With the work they did last May, things run smoother. Now, nonessential apps cannot make calls for updates, or transient content requests for rel...

Re: stake counselors presiding in ward meetings.

I have an example of where an area seventy had to preside at a stake conference outside his area. In January 2008 Elder Richard G. Hinckley was assigned to preside at a stake conference in Las Vegas. That was the weekend President Hinckley was deteriorating and he would be gone the next night. So he...

Re: Firewall policy blocking VPNs

The CDN angle is reasonable now given you can set up Amazon S3 accounts as a sort of personal CDN, they are often used to dispense all kinds of video content, and some CDNs, including Amazon, are widely abused to emit all manner of nefarious and otherwise undesireable content. Something could be don...

Re: Firewall policy blocking VPNs

I had not heard of those parental control and filtering options, it looks like they may be running through a particular IP so it looks like the problem reported early on with Chromecast devices as they needed a particular IP setting to work. Another filtering option is the free K( Web Protection, us...

Re: Guaranteed traffic for leadership?

We had bottlenecks, until we updated the cabling to the best CAT 5 stuff we could get, also reran some of that and now no spots where we get less bars or other issues causing sluggishness. Did this last year and it is as good or better than most other places that also offer free wifi, and this was b...

Re: Guaranteed traffic for leadership?

I just thought of another, unexpected issue, one that is unexpected because we may not have realized there might be a problem. Some meetinghouses contain an FHC. The machines there are normally in the FHC zone, and FHCs have wifi. So, the problem there may be that some that are near the wifi are get...

Re: Guaranteed traffic for leadership?

Probably the best way is to set up an entirely new zone for those in leadership. Most major filtering solutions allow for this, where you can set policies for different workgroups and this approach is the most commonly used to manage bandwidth use. For example, leaders would have access to a few mor...
