LDS Tools Now More Versatile for Members and Leaders Twitter Facebook Print E-mail

LDS Tools has long been the go-to app for member-to-member contacts, viewing calendar events, and locating meetinghouses. A recent update adds new functionality and features for iOS and Android platforms that make the app even more versatile for members and leaders. This new functionality includes more membership data and more reports from Leader and Clerk Resources (LCR) that let users drill down to specifics and use in-line filters.

Developers are working to create an intuitive experience by taking advantage of platform-specific features and connections to companion apps like LDS Maps that deliver useful information. The value is enhanced when members take time to upload their photos and set visibility settings for the directory to allow other members in their ward and stake to see their contact information.

Currently, with the exception of photos and contact information, data in LDS Tools is read-only, but more functionality and features are planned. For now, the newest features in version 2.5 are welcome and worth exploring.

New Member-related Features

  • Added ability for members to view their own membership, ordinance, and calling data including sustained date and if they have been set apart.

  • Greater ability to crop and adjust photos from within the iOS mobile interface.
  • Easier viewing of meetinghouse locations with a new “List Results” menu, and more robust messaging and sharing ability for Android. Note: The “Tap to Text” icon to the right of phone numbers will now allow you to send a text message from Android.

  • A simplified process for updating an LDS Account password when it is changed in the LDS Account settings online.

New Leader-related Functionality

  • Added home and visiting teaching data and reports with drill down to see 13-month details, and more in-app filtering options.

  • Relabeling of “Callings” menu to “Organizations” with added ability for leaders to see full organizational lists of members as well as use the lists for messaging.
  • Added ability to tap on a category in the “Unit Statistics” report to see details with more options to share or display results on a map.

  • Support for Apple’s Touch ID in place of the passcode and near-field communications (NFC) support for Android users to share custom lists.
  • Added ability to filter the “Birthday List” by organization.
  • Added ability to see contact information for a prior ward bishop on the Members Moved In Report.

Look for continued enhancements to LDS Tools. Take time to view the presentation in the LDSTech 2015 session streams entitled LDS Tools App, What’s New? What’s Next? by Justin Krebs, product manager for LDS Tools. He will give you an overview of version 2.5 and what is planned for version 3.0 due out first quarter of 2016 as well as what other enhancements are being considered for 2016.

Hopefully you will get this comment and respond to me. I can't take a printscreen and have an email shared in my pc windows 8.1 LDS Tools app. LDS Tools will not sync. I have tried everything! Even deleted the app and downloaded a new one. I am a SID and it is very important for me to have this app. I use it often daily. What do I do?

Please use the Feedback link under Help within the app to email us or email us at: LDSToolsSupport so we can investigate the issue. Thanks!

The recent enhancements are very helpful and user friendly. Thank you everyone for your insight and diligence with these improvements.

In my opinion, it would be of value to add the visibility to each member the ability to see the Home Teaching and Visiting Teaching routes. I know its currently available to the leaders, but not for the members
# Justin Krebs 2016-01-04 10:18

Thanks for the feedback. We are considering allowing members to see their own home and visiting teaching assignments and who is assigned to them in a future release but no timeline at this point.
# Matthew Kenton-Bartley Chambers 2016-01-10 12:15
I fully agree! If we could see HT/VT assignments, If members could see who HT/VT their families, and if HT/VT could use the app to mark or report their visits...this would be amazing and the work would roll forth LARGER and FASTER!!!

+1. This would be extremely helpful to the average member

I love LDS tools and have found it to be very useful. One thing that I and several members of our ward would like to see is the ability to edit the calendar from the app and not have to log into our account. Is that something being considered?
# Justin Krebs 2016-01-06 09:45

Thanks for the feedback. We are considering adding this ability in a future release but no timeline at this point.
# Glen Larson 2016-02-05 07:42
I agree with several for general members viewing all their personal HT/VT assignments. Additionally, app and/or email subscription notification would be beneficial upon assignment changes (things to think about on this additional request would be does the Elders Quorum presidency have a buffer before the notification in case they're in the middle of several changes and need to review everything until final decision).
# Justin Krebs 2016-02-05 09:04

Thanks for the feedback, we will definitely consider it.

I have a question about Handbook 2 guidance about building scheduling, it appears that the handbook does not recognize the option to use the online calendaring. it still says each agent bishop appoints a building scheduler and all events are to be scheduled through that single contact. I have asked a few other stakes here in Utah and they have not implemented the online calendar at all. Please provide any authoritative guidance that supports the de-centralized use of the on-line calendars. Our stake has done a pretty good job in using the on-line calendars, but we are now trying to refine and establish policies to conform with the handbook on proper use of the buildings.
# David Crockett 2016-02-10 12:45
You can be assured that any tool the Church officially provides has been approved by the brethren. The online calendar is now used by about 80% of the units in North America. Feel free to get on board. The text in the handbook isn't meant to mean that you have to stick with old ways of doing scheduling. Building shcedulers are still involved, but they have less of a role, mediate, review, and schedule non-ward/stake events such as funerals, approved family events, etc.

Can lds tools show ward boundary on the map? And how do we add a sub branch. ( A branch under a branch?)
# Justin Krebs 2016-04-12 12:19

LDS Tools cannot currently show Ward boundaries. You can access Ward boundaries on As far as adding a sub-branch, please check with your stake or district president.

Can you tell me if lists I create in LDS Tools can be synched to my account with similar functionality, like being able to map my list or email my list?
# Justin Krebs 2016-05-04 10:21

While the lists you create in LDS Tools are synced with Church Servers, they are only visible through the LDS Tools app and not through

Please improve product roll out to Android. Being a go to person, this past week Android users of LDS Tools asked: "where did my LDS Tools go? I can't find it anywhere"

The problem was that in an automatic update the LDS Tools android app was removed from Android home screens, and the icon appearance was changed. Seems minor. Fact: big frustration and prevented users from finding their apps.

Please raise the bar on updates and roll outs. This felt very sloppy and very user unfriendly to those who experienced it.
# Kevin Foster 2016-06-01 10:51
The 3.0 version of LDS Tools Android app no longer allows viewing of membership and ordinance data under the Membership Information section in the directory.

This was invaluable as a clerk. Now, with 3.0, I can't even view my own membership and ordinance information, let alone those of my ward.

Was this an intentional limitation? If so, can you please tell us what you want us to use? If not intentional, do you know when it will be reintroduced?

# Jeremy A Weeks 2016-06-24 00:54
Kevin, this information is still there. You will need to drill down from household to individual listings, then slide to the farthest right tab "Membership Information" and it is all there. Using version 3.0.1

The movement from phoning to text has changed how I need to work in my calling as Stake Exec Sec. When will LDS Tools show membership names on texts similar to it does when they call? Also, can a feature be added to store the most recent 5-10 phone calls, with member names within the app? Texts too?

While texting all members within an organization you are limited to 10 within an MMS. Can this be changed, or an option added, to send your message as a single SMS to all members within the organization to prevent the 10 person limit?

While texting all members within an organization you are limited to 10 within an MMS. Can this be changed, or an option added, to send your message as a single SMS to all members within the organization to prevent the 10 person limit?

Also to prevent the annoying responses to a group text.

LDS Tools app
Please provide a way to download all member contacts as a group from an organization from a single menu command.
# Jeremy A Weeks 2016-06-23 16:53
Please provide a function within the LDS Tools app to email or SMS text from the Stake Organization to all unit bishops, bishoprics, WML, etc. similar to the ability of sending a message on LCR.
# Jeremy A Weeks 2016-06-24 00:41
Right now the LDS Tools app is limited to texting either the Presidency of an organization or all members. If you are sending the same message to more than one person, you can only send to everyone with that organization, and it sends as an MMS with a limit of 10. There is no function to select certain members for whom you are trying to group text, or the inverse, excluding members who should not receive the text. Please build in a check box selection function where one can decide which members of an organization will receive the message. And again, provide a means whereby a message being sent to a selected list is sent as individual SMS text message, and not as a group MMS text message. Thank you.

Hi ward membership clerk here. When I update or add member photos to the ward directory in LDS.ORG, the photos do not appear in LDS Tools Organizations even after a resync, I must go into the members name before I can see the photo. This is only for new or updated photos, the old photos still appear. thanks Steve Hamilton
# Trevor Christopher Kenney 2016-08-21 20:39
I'd like to add my request for the ability to select which members in a quorum are to receive a text message. Also, is the 20 name limit for sending a message a "Tools" limit or a limitation on my phone? Thank you. Trevor Kenney, Perth Western Australia.

Hi there. My wife and I have been in our current ward for over 4 months. Our records have been received and are located in our current ward, however, when we try to view the ward directory, maps, callings, etc. on either LDSTools or we see our previous ward's information. The strange thing is that our membership records do not appear. I even still have the same leadership access to prior ward members' information. We've tried all the usual remedies (delete, download, sync, etc.). Any thoughts or ideas how to fix this? Thanks, B. Mecham

I am using the Apple version 3.1.0 (5296) and have tried to create a new list. I can create the list but when I try to add names to the list either by scrolling the directory or tapping a letter on the right hand side of the page, the app crashes and I have to log back in. I have used lists before and they work great, but something is wrong. I even tried deleting the app and reinstalling to no avail. I'm on an iPhone 6 and iPad Air.
