LDS Tools Connect Members, Leaders, and Missionaries Twitter Facebook Print E-mail

The LDS Tools mobile team has just released an upgrade for Android and iOS (Apple). New features make the app more versatile for connecting with other members, leaders, and missionaries. According to Justin Krebs, product manager for LDS Tools, “The addition of missionary contact information in LDS Tools makes it easier for members to contact missionaries and coordinate their efforts in hastening the work of salvation."

The monthly user base of over 1 million devices running LDS Tools is evenly spread between iOS and Android. If you are a mobile user, you will find the upgraded app a valuable resource in your line-up of mobile favorites. Here are some key features:

1)      Reports and additional membership data are now available to members of the ward council, including their presidencies and secretaries, which give them access to reports from Leader and Clerk Resources (LCR) on their mobile devices. The additional data access for leaders requires a Passcode (iOS) or a PIN (Android) to keep sensitive information private. If the app is left idle and open, the user's session times out and requires the user to reenter their LDS Tools Passcode or PIN.

2)      The missionary menu shows missionaries assigned to your ward and missionaries serving from your stake, along with photos and contact information. The information is kept up to date by the local mission office, so you can keep up with your missionaries by performing a data sync. Both member and missionary profiles connect to maps to help find where people live and to locate meetinghouses. Members have contact information for missionaries, and missionaries in missions with mission-issued mobile devices have member information for their assigned wards.

3)      Navigation within the app is improved. A new directory sort called “Family” is available for Android, and is set as the default which makes scrolling through the directory, and tapping on individual members, easier to manage. A “Household” view is also available on iOS, which shows a head of household and family members in a new window when the head of household is selected from the directory. Privacy settings within a user profile allow members to decide what contact elements are visible to which groups, and directory search now uses both street address lines.

4)      Improved functionality could easily be overlooked by the simplicity of the menu structure. For example, you can add events to your device’s native calendar by “long-pressing” on a calendar event (iOS) or tapping the share icon (Android). When you select a member from the directory, you can create a new contact or update an existing contact on your mobile device’s contacts app. When you add a contact, the information is copied, so it does not automatically update when you re-sync your LDS Tools. For that you will need to edit the contact.

A useful feature in LDS Tools is the ability to create custom member lists from within the protected environment of the app. You create the list, add names from the directory, and then use the list to send email or text messages. A new feature allows you to sort your lists, or sort members within lists, in different ways. Custom lists do not disappear when the app is upgraded. The same annotation syncing service retains your custom lists (similar to notes in Gospel Library). Lists created in LDS Tools on one mobile device automatically migrate to your other mobile devices.

New versions of LDS Tools for Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 8.1 were also recently released. Adding additional functionality including membership data and reports to the Windows versions of LDS Tools to match what currently exist in the iOS and Android versions of LDS Tools is being evaluated, but no timeline has been established at this point.

Love it, and I like how the look and menu match that of the Gospel Library app. But I would also appreciate if, in addition to meetinghouses, it had info about the nearest temple. When your nearest temple doesn't have endowment sessions every 30 minutes or even every hour, it's helpful to be able to look up the schedule quickly. And lds.org on mobile works, but it's not as convenient as having the info already on your device in an app.

We discovered a bug in iOS LDS Tools shortly after we released it. We posted an FAQ in the Help Center (https://lds.org/lds-tools-support). Here are the details of the FAQ in case you or someone you know is having this issue:

I just downloaded the new version of LDS Tools on my iPhone and now my directory is blank. How do I get my directory list back?
We apologize for this issue. In order to get your directory data to appear again, tap sort in the top right corner of the directory screen and select an option (e.g. Household, Individual, Family). Your directory data will then display.

We are working on submitting an updated version to the app store with this fix in it as well.

As a Stake Youth Leader it would be nice if we could have access to the Youth in the Stake. Is there any way to make that possible? As it is right now, we have to ask a Stake Secretary to pull the information from MLS or go to each ward individually.

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-01 12:36
This is something that is being considered currently by Church priesthood councils but no timeline at this point.

# Chuck Burgess 2015-04-01 12:37
Awesome! Thanks for the heads up and the quick reply.

# Kenneth Alden Staker 2015-04-24 15:10
It would also be very helpful for a high councilor assigned to a ward that is not their home ward to be able to see the youth information.

# Chad Walin 2015-04-01 12:56
Something that would be helpful while discussing member's needs in councils is to be able to pull up Home/Visiting Teachers that are assigned.

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-01 12:57
That is planned for our next release, 2.5.0, currently scheduled for the end of Q2, 2015.

# Wayne Pierson 2015-04-01 12:59
Awesome job on this app!

# Benjamin Chua, IV Candari 2015-04-01 13:04
Similar to Chad's comments, I have been waiting for the HT/VT assignment feature. This will be really helpful not only for the leaders but all members.

# Linda Johnson 2015-04-01 13:22
This sounds wonderful. I'm the RS pres in my ward and I was wondering in the new update concerning VT and HT we will be able to access that to change route information from our home computer. I love the feature that I am able to access the member information and reports from home for my calling.

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-01 13:27
You will be able to manage home and visiting teaching updates through the Leader and Clerk Resources (LCR) website: https://lds.org/lcr in our LCR 3.0 release scheduled for the end of Q2, 2015. Initially, the home and visiting teaching data and reports will be view-only in LDS Tools.

# Peggy Lee Knighton 2015-04-03 09:00
So are you saying that we will be able to make the changes to the VT and enter the monthly reports from our home computers in the next release at the end of Q2? That would certainly make life easier than to have to find someone to let you in the clerk's office to use the computer there when it is available.

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-03 09:12
Correct, based on our current schedule, you should be able to manage and update HT/VT data and view HT/VT reports in Leader and Clerk Resources (LCR) by the end of Q2, 2015 and will be able to view but not update the data and reports in LDS Tools by the end of Q2, 2015 as well.

# Mark A Jenkins 2015-04-01 14:18
Since arriving at our mission assignment I have wanted very much to have access to the ward directory etc. in my LDS Tools app. It is great you were already doing it. It is too bad for us though that it is only mission issued devices since I don't think my wife and I are getting one.

Keep up the good work I love the app.

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-01 14:22
If you have a personal device, you should be able to access the directory as well, you just need to have the mission office assign you to the units you are serving in in the Internet Mission Office System (iMOS) application.

# Mark A Jenkins 2015-04-03 09:16
Thanks Justin. Will that access to directory information for missionaries work with personal android devices or just Apple devices?

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-03 09:23
It will work with Android, iOS and Windows devices running LDS Tools.

# Elizabeth Marie Cope 2015-04-01 15:20
I am the visiting teaching coordinator in our ward. It would be of great value to me, to be able to submit my report from this app. Is there a way to do this?

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-01 15:55
We may add the ability to update home/visiting teaching data through the LDS Tools app in the future but initially it will be view only. You will be able to update this data through the Leader and Clerk Resources (LCR) site (https://lds.org/lcr) by the end of Q2, 2015.

# Wade Dean Lowder 2015-04-01 15:25
Would rely like to see the Lesson Schedules added to the app. and maybe a link to LDS.org to sign into your account as people often get confused between the app information and what is on ones LDS.com account. Thanks

# Daniel Soh 2015-04-01 16:58
Will there be added feature to allow Stake leaders eg Stake Aug or high council members to see all Ward members info even if it's private? Perhaps an option to have another level of besides bishopric and Stake Presidency to allow Stake officers to see all Stake members contact.

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-02 08:40
This is currently being considered by priesthood councils but no timeline at this point.

# Sharon Leslie Howell 2015-04-02 06:30
Wade, There is a feature on lds.org for lesson schedules. Sign in and pick "All Tools" from the menu options. Lesson schedules is one the choices. It must be populated by priesthood and auxiliary leaders for all the courses for your unit.

# Wade Dean Lowder 2015-04-02 09:21
Sharon,
Thank you for the response. Understand it is on LDS.org. Just would like to see it added to the LDS tools app. I often have to tell memebrs to go to LDS.org and not use the LDS tools app, 2 different things. Thanks

# Phil Brueck 2015-04-02 07:01
What is the status of giving Stake Patriarchs access to the youth information. Too often a youth will call for an appointment and not leave a phone number. Because they live with a family that doesn't share the last name it is not always easy to find them.

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-02 12:06
Patriarchs should be able to see youth in their stake in a few weeks, we are in the process of making that update now.

# Lawrence Higginson 2015-04-02 10:20
Is there a place for Church Service Missionaries? My wife and I were called and set apart almost three years ago as Addiction Recovery Program missionaries. People also serve in the Salt Lake Inner City Missions that are not listed.

# Rustin Deon Floyd 2015-04-02 10:25
Would it be possible to include the ability to click on a member's address from within the app and have the app give directions to the address from your current location - not simply show where the address is located on a map?

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-02 12:48
You can do that now. On Android, just long press on the address and select "Navigate address". On iOS, tap on the address and then from the map tap on the red pin and then tap on the green diamond icon.

# Michael C. Evans 2015-04-02 13:08
With the HT/VT, companion and families would be useful as Leadership makes changes and expect everyone to know then passes out assignments 2-3 weeks later. With this a simple e-mail could announce changes and it's there on tools.

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-03 08:40
Great suggestion, this is something we are considering but no timeline at this point.

# Bret L. de St. Jeor 2015-04-02 17:06
It would be GREAT if Home Teaching and Visiting Teaching assignments were available at our finger tips too. As leaders this would so helpful. Please add HT and VT to LDS tools.

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-03 08:41
HT/VT data and reports will be available to leaders in the next release of LDS Tools (2.5) currently scheduled for the end of Q2, 2015.

# Mary Williams 2015-04-02 18:51
I would love to see a way to take third hour roll (check the names who are present) and have those numbers submitted directly to the membership clerk or the place he puts them later. This would also reduce mistakes when doing the 'funny' count for the quarterly stats. It could be a source for useful reports such as 3 absences in the last 6 weeks, etc.

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-03 08:43
Great suggestion, I will pass it along for consideration. Thanks!

# Glenn David Smith 2015-04-03 02:11
Great improvement with the Missionary listing. It would be helpful to be able to send a text by tapping on the phone number having a choice to text or call. Glenn Smith

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-03 08:54
Glenn, you can do that now. On iOS, just tap on the phone number and you will get the option to text or call. On Android, just long press on the number and you will the get the same options.

# Gregory Barr Neff 2015-04-03 15:05
My LDS tools has been missing some callings information for a few weeks now. Delete app and re-sync makes no difference. Callings info is complete in MLS and at lds.org. Is this a know problem? In my case, for example, there is no Young Mens Presidency. Same for Android or ios.

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-03 15:08
Yes this is a known issue. I apologize for the inconvenience it is causing. We will have it fixed with the next couple of weeks. Thanks for your patience.

# Mark Alan Perryman 2015-04-05 09:49
I love this app and use it all the time; however since the last update I have not been able to update and use the app on my Apple devices. I get one of the following two messages every time try to sync: Error Downloading Some information could not be downloaded, please try again later or Warning LDS.org is currently down for maintenance. Please try again later. I have waited several days and tried again and even removed and downloaded the app again, but I still cannot gain access to the app or the data. Do you have any suggestions. Thanks.

I have a new Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge (Android)and was experiencing the identical problem. Also have iPhone 6 - no problems.
Tried every day for 2 weeks. Despite numerous emails back and forth to LDS Tools support, no fix.
I tried it again today and it is now working.

You mentioned that missionaries (we are a full-time senior couple) can be granted permission in IMOS to see the ward directory for the ward they are serving in. I don't see where that permission is granted. Is it in CDOL?

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-13 12:20
No, it is in iMOS. Check with your mission office. Thanks!

I really appreciate the Calendar Sync option, on my computer email calendar and from my smart phone. You can find it on the the PC by clicking on the Sync button. You can find it on the Phone by clicking the share Icon then copy to your devices calendar. Very Impressive and so helpful! Now I can get reminders i.e. Conference Times :-)

I have recently upgraded my smartphone and I am using a different messenger (text) application. On my old smartphone, the contact Name would show up in the text notification line. On the new smartphone S6-E, only the Phone Number shows up, not the Name. What settings would I need to make in order for the LDS tools contact Name to show up in the text notification line? Thank You

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-22 12:54
We don't have that functionality in LDS Tools. I'm wondering if when you switched smartphones you lost your contacts in your phone's address book.

# J.T. 2015-04-22 09:55
All of these updates are cool and can´t wait to use them, but I am wondering one thing about the LDS Gospel Library App for Windows 8 and 8.1. When the app first installed, the app loads quickly, but the more content you install, the longer it takes to open the app, if it opens at all. Is it mainly based on what the specs of the computer are to make the app load faster, a bug in the app, or am I just being dumb and have too much downloaded to make the app go slower.

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-22 10:25
That would be a good question by emailing their support account: GospelLibrary-Win@ldschurch.org. Thanks!

I have a small problem with the scrollbar, when I add a new name in a list. Before I select the box to include the name to the list, I have to wait some seconds so I can do it because the scroll bar is over the box. I am using android. Thanks !

Luis,

Please use the feedback link within the app to report this issue so we can investigate.

Being a church service missionary I would like to see a list of those who are serving as missionaries in that capacity as well. This would be a great help in our calling and would set a good example for others.

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-27 11:49
James,

This is being considered but no timeline at this point.

Thanks!

# James I Miller 2015-04-24 09:51
Another thought - Our calling covers seven stakes and we are always trying to find a stake or ward leader in another stake outside our stake of residence. I know they should sign up in LDSjobs.org and that would resolve the problem but many are not aware of that and we have problems contacting them. Could we have access to membership and missionaries in multiple stakes?

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-27 11:58
James,

I will forward this feedback on for consideration.

Thanks!

# Don Anderson 2015-04-24 21:09
I am a Missionary serving in Salt Lake City UT they moved my records in that branch it would be nice if I had access to my stake in Washington. Once my records transferred to the mission that was the end of my home stake being able to see me or me see them. It would be nice to be able to keep in contact with my home stake.

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-27 12:01
Don,

They shouldn't have to move your records from your home ward, they should just be creating an out of unit record in the branch you are serving in. The clerk in that branch can refer to this article: https://www.lds.org/help/support/create-out-of-unit-record?lang=eng. Thanks!

# Jason Ryan 2015-04-24 23:41
This has been a great app since its release and it just keeps getting better! Two things I would love to see is access to HT/VT rosters and access to the missionary progress reports. Keep up the great work!

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-27 12:03
Jason,

The HT/VT data and reports will be available to ward councils including presidencies and secretaries in our 2.5.0 release, currently scheduled for the end of Q2, 2015. On the missionary progress reports, I will pass that feedback on for consideration.

Thanks!

# Clayton Rountree 2015-04-26 01:43
I was a missionary in a mobile device mission. One capability we wanted with LDS tools was the ability to see youth info in LDS tools. We had it in the areabook planner app but its much easier to work with in LDS tools.

Also, the ability to share a list created, so a companionship could create a list of members they need to visit, then share it so both companions have the list on their iPads.

Finally, the ability for a college student to have their local ward/stake as well as their home ward/stake would be very nice.

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-27 13:15
Clayton,

Great feedback, I will pass it along for consideration.

Thanks!

I am a Relief Society Secretary, and I have not been able to locate a link online that will allow me to view VT companionships and the sisters to whom they are assigned.

Do I not have access to these reports? If I do, can you please direct me to this link?

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-27 13:17

It would be beneficial if we could manage our LDS Account from within the LDS Tools application. If we could use the app for password recovery or some other way of ensuring the security of our account, that would be appreciated.

Great feedback Matthew, we will consider it.

Having our Thai Elder's name appear in Thai doesn't help us English speakers much. Could the names of missionaries be posted to the LDS Tools app. in the language of the country/unit in which they are serving? Thanks!

Would it be possible for patriarchs to be able to see the individual membership number on LDS Tools? I serve 5 stakes and 2 of the stakes use the new patriarch computer program, but the rest do not. The old recommend forms do not have the membership number and some don't even list the birth date, both of which are required to submit to the Church. In addition, the Provo MTC is not on the patriarch computer system.

Thanks for the feedback, we will consider it.

Hi Justin,

I currently have three Stake level callings, Ward Finance Clerk, Stake Family History Consultant, and Stake Indexing Director. It looks like my Android application doesn't apply the user rights associated my Finance Clerk calling and I am unable to access Member Record Numbers for my Ward. I also as the Stake Family History Consultant help members across the Stake access Family Search and it would be very helpful I could get their MRNs as well.

- Mark

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-29 08:54
Hey Mark,

The finance clerk doesn't currently have access to the MRN nor do your other current callings. I will pass this feedback along for consideration.

Thanks!

# Mark Lewis Donnelly 2015-04-29 09:46
Justin,

This policy is inconsistent with the access a Finance Clerk has to MRNs through MLS and in the directory on lds.org, and is a required field on the Tithing Slip. Up until February I could see MRNs in the Android app. When and why did this access change?

All the best,

Mark

# Justin Krebs 2015-04-29 10:17
Mark,

I have reached out to our process owners to inquire on this. This article in the Help Center shows who has access to additional membership data in Leader and Clerk Resources (LCR) and LDS Tools: https://www.lds.org/help/support/clerk-resources-access-table?lang=eng. Those that have access to the MRN is a smaller subset of this list.

Thanks!

I was meeting with my stake president this evening in his stewardship interview with me as bishop, and we were discussing the need for quarterly reports on the LDS Tools app. I presume that we are not the only people who see the need for this? Please can we on LDS Tools have it as soon as possible?

Is there a way to share custom lists with others?
In my stake, we have many contact groups in gmail for different organizations, meetings, and groups that we contact on a regular basis. It would be nice to be able to create the custom lists in LDS Tools and be able to share those with other clerks, secretaries, and presidencies.

# Justin Krebs 2015-09-02 07:27
Troy, great suggestion. This is in our list of enhancements we are considering for the future. Thanks!

# Michael Alan Woods 2015-09-27 09:59
Today I looked at the calendar on lds.org on my PC and compared it to the calendar on my ldstools (and sync'd first). Several items are missing in the ldstools calendar. Do we as members have to sync so that they match, or is the calendar scheduler not doing it right, or is there a lag time to update? I am a FHC director trying to get our Stake Family History Day posted on all calendars. Thanks.

# Justin Krebs 2015-09-28 09:14
They should match, you may just need to verify which calendars you have selected to display in LDS Tools by tapping on "Calendars" in LDS Tools and selecting which calendars to display. You can also tap on "Subscriptions" to see which calendars you are subscribed to. If the issue persists, please email us at: LDSToolsSupport @ldschurch.org for assistance. Thanks!
