Are you curious to know how you are related to historical figures? A website developed by the BYU Family History Technology Lab uses the power of computer algorithms combined with data from FamilySearch.org to make connections. Providing you have some family history information already entered, you can use the site to test how closely you are related to some interesting and prominent people.

The website is called “Relative Finder.” It uses information in your family tree at FamilySearch.org to connect you with past and present Church leaders, royalty and national leaders, or other groups of individuals including custom groups.

Follow these quick steps to check out the site:

  1. Go to http://roots-fb.cs.byu.edu/
  2. Sign in with your LDS Account. (You can enter an email if you want, but at a minimum you will have to agree to the terms of use.)
  3. Click “Download my Tree” and wait for the site to evaluate your family history.
  4. When the prompt appears saying it is done, click OK.
  5. Click on Relatives on the title bar.
  6. Select the group or groups for which you want check out relationships, such as “Book of Mormon Witnesses,” “US Presidents,” or “Science Technology.”
  7. Click on the “Show Relatives” button.
  8. A list will populate if relatives are present. (You will see the relative’s name, the relationship, and a link to a chart showing the common ancestor and all the links between.)
  9. From here you may download a PDF or print the chart.

The site uses FamilySearch.org data, so you might run into some glitches because of data errors or missing connections, but the experience is a fun thing to do with family history. You might be surprised to find family connections to prominent people that you didn’t know about.

Loved sharing this with my children and granddaughter. I had 2 lines that lead to lots of relatives. Some are not close but were fun to see anyway. 107 pages times 10 per page is a lot of relatives.
There were a few duplicates. Even a 12th great grandfather that was on the Mayflower that I knew nothing about.
Thanks!! A great experience.

This is a great tool for finding relatives. I love this app! It's great in helping those not as interested in genealogy to see what they're missing as well as finding relatives that are past and present Church leaders, royalty and national leaders. Having my neighbors participate in Relative Finder has shown me that I'm related to many of them. It's terrific! Thank you - Thank you!!

There is a HUGE fly in the ointment with this one.

Since 1 pm Utah time, yesterday the downloading is frozen at 5%.

Following the FAQ suggestion of shutting down the browser and re-starting it doesn't work either.

I am locked out.

Perhaps the program is in shock because of who I have in my family tree!

I really enjoyed this wealth of information. I had over 1,200 unique individuals that I share common progenitors. Many signers of Declaration of Independence(18), Constitution(14), European Royalty(12), current Apostles(11), past Apostles(47), Prophets(14) and even John (Duke) Wayne - my older brothers hero!

This was a lot of fun, I now will be focusing on the Common Ancestor and their History.

Thanks

Well done! A great boon to children and grand children alike...not to mention their parents. Will this work for all accounts on FamilySearch.org ?

"Relative Finder" loads only 15 generations, whereas "FamilySearch" has my line going back 78 generations. Given that more time would be required to download a larger tree, will it be possible in the future for an option to be available to load more generations?

I am not able to compare a relative with other relatives we are connected to. I do not care about him being related to others in "his" tree. If you took it off please put it back on. I like seeing how we are related to others. I really really like that. Please put that feature back on. Please! Pretty Please!
