Gospel LibraryGospel Library 2.0 for Windows 8.1 is a major upgrade from the legacy LDS Gospel Library. If you have been putting off upgrading to the latest version of Windows, this new release provides ample justification to do so. Jim Byer, Sr. Engineer for the Gospel Library project says, “Because the Gospel Library has many different users on different platforms, we wanted to make it as easy and simple to find things as we could so anyone using iPad or Android would be able to find the same functionality and features he or she is accustomed to.” This includes the...

...large “Library” section on the home page and a quick library navigation pane accessible from the new left Navigation bar. No need to swipe to find what may be hidden off-screen.

Gospel Library 2.0 is optimized for Windows 8.1 on desktops and tablets. Software engineers and 250 LDSTech volunteers combined talents to make Gospel Library a robust and feature-rich tool for personal gospel study.

The look and feel will be familiar to non-Windows users of the Gospel Library.

New navigational controls make finding content and features easy and intuitive whether you are working from a touch screen, a stylus, or using a keyboard and mouse. A stylus or mouse makes selecting text easier. Drag to select a word, phrase, or whole paragraph and then use the new radial menu to highlight, bookmark, or share specific passages. Use forward and back navigation buttons throughout the application to move deeper into options and then retreat back step-by-step. Move to the next or previous chapter using the navigation buttons on the left and right of the viewing area.

When moving between a manual and the scriptures, a new pinning feature keeps the library content list open while you browse passages, or move back and forth between sources. If you want to locate a specific passage, use the search menu from the Navigation bar. To customize your reading experience, resize text or change to reverse video from Settings.

You can link from the pre-filtered search options to content in the library. History will keep track of where you have been and group your browsing history chronologically.

Feature-rich content adds inline images, video streaming, and page numbers in Church manuals and magazines. The expanded content is available in 106 languages and the user interface is configurable in five languages. If you are moving between platforms, notes, bookmarks, and highlights may be synced at LDS.org from other non-Windows devices running Gospel Library.

Planned for a future release is the ability to sync from within the app. Additional changes for small form-factor Windows phones are pending and will be released in the near future.

Gospel Library is available online at the Windows Store. Enter “Gospel Library for Windows” in the search box. Download Gospel Library and install on your desktop or laptop PC or Windows tablet. The app is free.

Windows applications are developed by LDSTech volunteers. Here are some project pages if you wish to participate:

Any word on when there will be a corresponding app for Mac users?

# Sharon Leslie Howell 2014-12-10 15:17
There are no plans in the immediate future for a Mac version of the Gospel Library. There is an iOS version.

Will there ever be a similar program for Windows 7?

# Sharon Leslie Howell 2014-12-12 09:26
Probably not. Windows 7 doesn't have the capability to run both apps and traditional software from the same OS, like Windows 8 or higher. The legacy LDS Gospel Library which runs under older versions of Windows is being retired.

# Brian Wilson 2016-07-25 17:06
If we're not going to get 2.0 for 7, let us have the legacy LDS Gospel Library.

This app is wonderful. I used the beta app while they were developing it and being able to highlight with my Wacom stylus is an amazing feature.
I would like to see a similar revamp for windows 8.1. They recently came out with LDS tools beta so it probably won't be long.

I have an old iPad that runs IOS 5. How can I download Gospel Library 2.5 which is compatible with this old iOS operating system please???

# Sharon Leslie Howell 2014-12-28 19:43
I could not find an IOS 5 gospel library when browsing the web for you. I believe the functionality under the older operating system would be so behind the times you would be disappointed with the result.

Have you downloaded Gospel Library 2.5 in the past? If so, it should be available under your "Purchases" on the iPad App Store app, or through iTunes on a PC or Mac. In most cases, Apple permits apps that are no longer available in the App Store to be re-downloaded by those that had downloaded the app prior to it being pulled.

If not, the scriptures can still be accessed via the Safari browser. If you sign in to LDS.org first, all your highlights, notes, etc will be present on the web version. Many chapels have wifi now. This would not give you offline access, however.

Are there any plans to bring these new features to Windows Phone 8.1? I recently updated this on my windows tablet and am blown away by how awesome it has been. Thanks guys!

There are plans to port the 2.0 version of Gospel Library for Windows 8.1 Desktop and Tablet to the Windows Phone, but we are just volunteers and resources are few. No release date has yet been announced. Thanks for your patience.

# John Anton Hedberg 2014-12-22 17:07
How do i erase highlights? Other than that I'm really happy for this edition! When will you make the design go over to the WP edition? Or that will happen in windows 10?

# Jim Byer 2014-12-30 10:05
To erase a highlight right click the highlight (or press and hold) and in the radial menu click the black arrow in the arc by the highlight icon. That opens a submenu with more options for highlighting.
There are plans to port this version to the Windows Phone, but no release date has yet been announced. Thanks for your patience.

John,
We are currently working on a number of improvements to the highlight/remove highlight options as well as add/edit/remove notes, and bookmarks. We are currently testing it in a sideload beta and hope to release it as a public beta through the store in the very near future (assuming we get as many bugs squashed as we can). We understand that the erasing of highlights is a troublesome feature in the current build and should have that remedied soon.

As for the Windows Phone build, this app is a Universal App and does share the codebase with a future Windows Phone release. I have it working in a very rudimentary fashion on my phone for now, but it is quite a ways away from being ready for a public beta release. The UI that we build for tablet/desktop doesn't translate well to phone. We are working to build an appropriate UI for the phone. Please be patient with us as we work out those designs. It will be worth it in the end.

Thanks for you support.

Great Job guys! Loaded it on Windows 10 Preview with no problems and appears to be working the same as on Windows 8/8.1

Thumbs up here. Would love to see a LDS Tools App for Windows too!

# Jim Byer 2014-12-30 10:03
There is a group of volunteers that are donating their time working on a LDS Tools for Windows 8.1 Desktop and Tablet. You can search "Projects" on http://tech.lds.org if you want to sign up to be a Beta tester.

# Tony Spencer 2014-12-30 11:21
Good point. They have made a great deal of progress on it. I actually have a beta build running on my machine and it works pretty well. If you feel inclined, sign up for the project and lend them your support.

# Jim Byer 2014-12-30 10:02
Version 2.0 of Gospel Library for Windows 8.1 Desktop and Tablet is in the Windows Store. You can search for "Gospel", "LDS", "Mormon", etc. You can install the Released version and, if you wish, the Beta version also which contains the new features we are currently working on.

This looks like a great update. Thank you for volunteering. Almost thou persuadest me to leave Windows 7. ;-)

Microsoft dropping the Windows 8.1 licensing fees for small-screen tablets is producing all kinds of low-cost, tempting Windows tablets. The HP Stream 7 for $99 seems like a great value, but jump to $149 and you can find other tablets that double the RAM to 2GB.

tl;dr - I like that the Windows app is desktop and tablet ready.

Can anyone tell me do you have to have wifi to use the gospel library for windows?

Quoting Terrell Thomas:

The Gospel Library app will require internet access in order to download content and to sync annotations.

However, you can operate the app offline as well and when you re-connect to the internet, it will sync your annotations again.

Is there a Gospel Library Windows 7 desktop app? Seems Microsoft is holding the app hostage to force updating to Windows 10.

# Sharon Leslie Howell 2016-01-19 11:19
Brian,
The GLW is constantly reassessing where to expend their resources. They are all volunteers. While it would be nice to continue to support every version, some decisions for the mobile version are forced by content provided by the Church delivered that just won't run on older versions. If you are hesitant to upgrade to Win 10, I did so without issues and have since learned it runs leaner and better on some old hardware with slower processors--the opposite of what one might expect.

I would like to know if the book Jesus the Christ from James Talmage is possible to download on Gospel Libray? Is there an option to also have this book on Gospel Library? Thanks.

It should be there. Under the main heading Jesus Christ. It's there on my pad. Make sure you have the most current version of Gospel Library installed.

How do I download the Gospel Library unto my PC? iS THERE A DOWNLOAD PROCEDURE TO FOLLOW

# Sharon Leslie Howell 2016-04-19 12:47
Follow the link from here: https://www.lds.org/pages/mobileapps/windows8-mobile?lang=eng. For Windows there is a GA version and another Beta Version that is stable and functioning well. You'll need your Microsoft account when downloading from the Windows store, but the app is free and will install itself. Be sure to sign in under settings to sync your notes and annotations with LDS.org.

You can search for "Gospel Library" in the Windows store. This works on Windows mobile devices and on Windows desktops. There is no desktop app for other desktop platforms. Gospel Library content is online on lds.org here:
