Thank you to everyone who attended the LDSTech Broadcast today on "Getting Digital Media into Meetinghouses Through Mobile Devices." The broadcast was well attended, with a lively question and answer session.
Note: There's a link (titled "More Information") to this help file at the very bottom of the Showing Videos how-to page in the New Youth Curriculum (Come, Follow Me).
If you have questions about downloading video, please post them in the LDSTech Forum, specifically in one of the following sections:
Currently Gospel Library iOS is behind the development of Gospel Library Android in terms of downloading media. Teams are working on a major new release to the iOS version that will bring the functionality within iOS more similar to that of Android, but that release is a few months away.
If you really want a workaround in the meantime, try using a download manager app to screenscrape the media content from a lesson page.
Also, if it's audio that's also available on the Mormon Channel, you could probably download that as a podcast? I'm not sure.
I can do that no problem with no computer interface. My original question regarding audio links (conference talks) is not necessarily seamless (I think). I think I have involve my computer in that process of grabbing audio (not video). Of course, I haven't tried any of this. Iris on my agenda tomorrow. ;)
Eric, the next version of iOS has a significant redesign, so they have been focusing their efforts on that next version. Also, the Android team, coming onto stage a bit later, had the benefit of hindsight to avoid mistakes that other teams made who were pioneering first attempts at designs and functionality. Anyway, shortly the two apps will be much more in sync.
I downloaded several videos (huge downloads btw) and I've tried 7 video players and several will only play audio and the players that will play audio are very choppy and the audio will not match up with the video. I wasn't able to find a single one that played correctly (Mobo, Mobo Pro, Es Media player, MX Player, Showtime Player Panel, Vital Player and VPlayer). Feeling like it was just bugs due to new software I almost gave up but decided to just download all the video's on my desktop and upload them to my tab (Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (4.0.4 IMM76D)) After I downloaded them and attempted to extract them I came across an error in regards to encryption. I continued (not skip) through all the errors and ended up with all the videos and then put them on a USB drive and using the usb to Samsung Tab interface I uploaded the videos to the tablet. All the video's play without any problem leading me to believe that it is not in fact an error with the player or codec but the app. Good luck dev
I also tried many different codecs that are optional with each player having no luck with any of them. If you have any questions about what combinations I tried feel free to reply.
I was able to stream them on my phone with out problem (Samsung Galaxy Nexus (4.1.1(JRO03O) I just tested downloading with the app on my phone and was able to play "The Restoration" video without any problem. It appears that it may be a problem on my tablet; and only using the app to download, as the videos will play when using the method I mentioned in my comment about my Tablet. Perhaps it's the api that specific version of the app that is on my Galaxy Tab is using to decrypt the incoming media downloaded to the app... I hope some of this is helpful. BTW I appreciate the hard work all the developers do on this project.
Glendon, thanks for the feedback. I'm not sure why the video files from the zip download are having issues. Can you post your report in the LDSTech Digital Media forum here: http://tech.lds.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=95&sid=834561f355338b4f1c992f7c7fb284af. Hopefully audio engineers can chime in there and figure out what the problem is.
The problem isn't with the video's that I downloaded directly in a zip file from the web-site. It's with the videos that i downloaded within the Gospel Library app.
Jason, I inquired about this. Right now Windows Phone 8 is on the to-do list, but it doesn't supersede Android or iOS in priority due to its decreased market share.
Currently there's more work than teams can feasibly do, so while I'd love to note that teams are working on Windows 8 versions, it may be a while before this happens. At any rate, you can still download and transfer video to any device the old-fashioned method -- via a USB cable. In fact, it may be quite a bit easier this way anyway.
Is there any word of when the windows 8 version will be available? I've got a bunch of friends using windows 8 on laptops and tablets that would love to have the gospel library on it because, let's face it, having offline scriptures on a device is great.
Also, the LDS gospel library app for my windows phone 8 device (HTC 8X) causes my phone to heat up considerably, to the point where I don't want to hold my phone anymore.
Also i'd like it if you could make sheet music available on windows phone. Right now when I want to do that on my 8X, I need to go the church website and download the PDF from the LDS music website. It's very troublesome to do this.
I downloaded some conferences and could listen to them without any problem but this demanded a huge bandwidth. With Internet issues in Africa, particularly in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRCongo), I would suggest to break down conference videos in three or four parts which can be "easily" downloadable.
Patrick, When you say you downloaded some conferences, are you talking about downloading general conference? Sorry about the bandwidth issues. We tend to overlook bandwidth restrictions in other parts of the world. However, we did have some IT directors in Africa who were relaying information about technical requirements, limitations, and infrastructure. I think you can download each general conference address individually rather than downloading the sessions as a whole.
I am using itunes 11 and trying to import church video from my pc to my ipad. I use icloud. I have imported the videos into itunes and i can see it on my pc in itunes. However, none of the video is syncing to my ipad. I can see video that I bought from itunes on my ipad so I know if works, but nothing that I imported into itunes from lds.org is showing up. Any ideas?
Unable to download Come Follow Me videos from Gospel Library Android app on Samsung Galaxy s3 -- I followed the instructions for downloading videos, Come follow me, for Android from the Gospel Library app but the media button never enables. It is grayed out (disabled). I tried for lessons in Sunday School, Young Mens and Young Womens. I have a Samsung Galaxy s3.
Kelly, I have a Galaxy Note II. While the media button never gets enabled, when I click on a video I get a prompt to either display the video or download it. Once downloaded I can go to "Manage Media" and view it or delete it.
BTW I purchased an MHL cable (MicroUSB on one end and HDMI on the other) and was able to display the video on a flat screen TV from my phone. I believe the S3 support MHL as well.
I tried to download video from the Youth Come Follow lessons onto my Kindle Fire HD and could not from within Gospel Library. The media button does not get enabled and when I click on a video link, unlike on my Samsung Galaxy Note II phone, the video is displayed immediately. On my Note II I get prompted whether I want to watch the video or download it.
I was able to download the Come Follow Me lesson videos by going directly to LDS.org website.
Great work, too bad the facilities dept isn't keeping up with you, can't count the number of churches that have no TV with HDMI support. If this is something that is left to the local level, its not happening, push for a media update mandate.

Eric, you made me chuckle because it's usually us Android people who are complaining about playing catch up with the Apple people!
To quote the bumper sticker Pres Uchtdorf quoted "Don't judge me because I sin differently than you"

I download videos to my PC, open iTunes and drag them to the the "Home Movies" window.
The videos are then available via the Videos app.
