LDS Tools Version 2.0 for iOS Released Twitter Facebook Print E-mail
Written by Tom Johnson
Wednesday, 16 May 2012

LDS Tools version 2.0 for iOS was recently released. Features in this release include reports and additional membership information for priesthood leaders, directory photo uploads for heads of household and ward or branch administrators, and other improvements. Each feature is described below.

Membership data and reports for priesthood leaders

If you are serving in a stake presidency, district presidency, bishopric, or branch presidency, or if you are an executive secretary or clerk, you can now view reports and membership data for your units.

When you log in you will be prompted to set up a passcode. This new passcode requirement helps prevent unauthorized access to membership data. After a 60-minute timeout period for each session, you will be prompted to re-enter your passcode.

Once signed in, you will see a new button at the bottom of the app called Reports. Two reports are now available: the Action and Interview List and the Birthday List. Both are shown below.

Action and Interview list -- LDS Tools

Birthday list -- LDS Tools

Birthday list report (iPad view)

In future releases, additional reports will be available, including Members with Callings, Members without Callings, Members Moved In, Temple Recommend Status, and Unit Statistics.

As a priesthood leader, you can also see the membership record number and birth date for a member of your unit. Additionally, stake presidents, district presidents, bishops, branch presidents, clerks, and membership clerks can also see ordinances recorded for a member.

Note that access to ordinance information supports direction from Handbook 1: “Official Church membership records should not be shown or given to members. Nor may they be copied for members. Under no circumstances may membership records be given to anyone other than the bishop or a clerk" (section 13.6).

Directory photo uploads

In previous releases, any photos you added to your directory in LDS Tools remained on your device. In version 2.0, photos for your household added by a head of household or photos added for a household by a ward or branch administrator now automatically sync to your directory profile on LDS.org as well.

LDS Tools -- uploading screenshots

Uploading photos to your directory profile (iPhone view)

To update your photo:

  1. Start LDS Tools and click the Directory button.
  2. Browse to your household.
  3. Click your photo.
  4. Click the camera button in the upper-left of your photo.
  5. Select one of the following options: Use Camera, Photo Library, Saved Photos.
  6. If you took a picture with your camera, click Use.
  7. When prompted to upload the image to the online directory, click Yes.

In Settings, you can select that photos be automatically uploaded to the online directory. To set automatic uploading, click the Settings Settings button in the upper-right corner. Scroll down to Changing Photos Online and move the slider to Yes.

Other updates

Other updates to LDS Tools include the following:

  • Settings button location. The Settings Settings button has been moved to the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Minor enhancements to the user interface. The menu structure and navigation is cleaner, with an improved flow.
  • Calendar updates. When you access the calendar, updates appear automatically, without requiring you to trigger the update.
  • Security options. You can add a security passcode (through Settings). Priesthood leaders are required to create a security passcode.  For more details, see the first section above, “Membership data and reports for priesthood leaders.”
  • Frequently asked questions. Answers to frequently asked questions have been added. To view them, go to Settings > Support. The following screenshot shows this new support view.

Other platforms and languages

Similar updates for LDS Tools for Android are underway. Additionally, Portuguese and Spanish language versions of LDS Tools are planned for a future release.

Getting involved

The LDS Tools team needs help developing and testing LDS Tools. If you would like to get involved in the LDS Tools project, click Projects on the top menu of LDSTech, click the Projects submenu, and then browse to the LDS Tools iOS or LDS Tools Android project and join it.

In the Directory, Individual Informantion
In the field where a personal phone number is inserted all the numbers run together. no spaces, dashes or parenthesies. Can this be changed to a standard format?

This is fantastic! I love where the church is going with these mobile apps. Our PEC meetings are now full of iPads. When I meet with the stake it seems like everyone has an iPad. More than half the people in gospel doctrine are using iPads now. (The rest of the people are on iPhones.) The technology and information we have at our fingertips is incredible. It is great to see the church embrace this technology. It really empowers the church leaders. Thank you!

When I updated using the new version, there seems to be a glitch in the birthday field -- every birthday gets "pushed" forward to January of the next year. For example, July 15, 1990 becomes Jan 15 1991. I did a clean update (delete old data, perform update) and the dates are still wrong. Verified on my bishop's iPhone as well as mine.

I'm assuming the dates are intact within MLS and this is simply a glitch with the LDS Tools app ... or so I hope!

Anyone else seeing this?

Members in our stake presidency are experiencing the same problem with the birth month being wrong. Looks like a bug in the program.

# Justin K. 2012-05-28 20:16
This is a known bug that is only in LDS Tools and will be fixed with our 2.0.2 release that will be out this week or early next week.

I am having the same problem as a bishop. Everyone has a January birthday... Clean update did NOT help.

Help!

I had this same problem with my iPhone and iPad. To fix the problem I deleted the LDS Tools applicaton and then powered off the device. I then turned the device back on, went to the app store and reinstalled the application. I then launched it and logged in and downloaded new data and created my security code and a few minutes later I ran the report and it was correct. I did not have the device connected to a computer or anything while I did this. Hope that works for you as well.

I just loaded LDS Tools on IPAD2. Right after it loaded, I could see the directory etc. When I closed out and tried to go in again, I just see the LDS Tools Cover, it sits for a second, the screen dims and then after 10 seconds or so, the app closes. I am a Bishop in a YSA ward, so it loaded 2 stakes worth of data, plus the details my YSA ward. I'm wondering if it can't handle two stakes??? Does anyone have any ideas? Suggestions (I have reloaded the app, but with the same result)

Ditto that! HT/VT assignments would be tremendously helpful (and we could finally quit using WardTools).

The growth in church technology has been awesome!!! Keep up the great work.

Having a list of the primary kids, their birthdays and upcoming graduations, baptisms, entering nursery list etc would be so helpful with a primary of over 100 kids. Also, our primary includes a ward, and a spanish branch- being able to combine the list of children from both would be helpful.

Does the app require a constant network connection? In other words, is any data cached locally so I can look things up when offline? Or is any data cached during the current session so the same data isn't downloaded over and over again?

# Steven Fullmer 2012-06-11 17:13
The app caches the data. For example, I sync my iPad at home where I have Wi-Fi, take it to church (no Wi-Fi, iPad has no 3G), and the data are still there. The data usually persist for about 30 days, at which time it informs you that you must resync with the LDS server to get the latest ward/stake changes.

You can download the data when you are connected by going to settings. The data is then encrypted and stored on your device for offline use.

They don't let us see youth names in wards other than our home ward. I am in the Stake Young Mens presidency and this makes it so that we can't get information on the youth that we have responsibility over.

Those in stake callings should have more visibility into the whole stake.

Does anyone know if there is a setting/feature to turn on the area codes in the phone numbers in the directory? Many people keep their cell phone numbers from previous areas which may not coincide with the ward area code. If this feature/setting does not currently exist in the current release I suggest this be in a future release.

The membership clerk could manually insert area codes into the directory of members so they will show up on LDS tools.

For some reason, in the "Other Calling" tab he Ward Mission leader is missing.

I thought at first that it might be due to there being too many listed on MLS so the missionary callings were moved up to the top of the listing on MLS, but the problem stil exists. Is there any way around this?

How quickly will the Android version be updated? We have more Android users than Apple users and that is the way the world is trending. It would be great if the church was developing equally for both.

About a year ago an LDS Technology employee made a comment to one of these posts and said something like "globally, the church's web site and mobile apps gets the most traffic from iOS, by a large margin". I can't find the exact post right now, but that was the gist of the mobile OS usage he shared with us.
That information matches what I see in my ward and stake.

It would be interesting to hear from a church employee if that trend has changed at all. And if so, in what direction?

I really don't want to make this into an "iOS vs Android Flame War!", but I would really love to know the breakdown of mobile traffic for the church. Anyone willing to share? ;)

Does it really matter what creates more traffic? Android devices are maturing and becoming more prevalent. I see more and more in our congregation. With the release of the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet I would think Android would be closing the distance. Also the LDS tools have never been equal between iOS and Android. Now the same has happened with the Gospel Library app too. So if I am looking to buy an iOS or Android device and one of the deciding factors is the LDS tools I would buy iOS.

Lets make them equal!

It would be nice if you could navigate the Calendar like the iPhone calendar, i.e. have a view of the entire month, select the day, then see what events were planned then. If you want to see what's happening in September, with LDS tools you have to scroll through 3 months of events to get to it.

I'm a Clerk, and can upload pictures of others to the directory via this app, which is great. Almost no one in our ward has uploaded pictures.
However, I can only do individuals, whereas the default picture shown in the lds.org directory is a family picture, and I can't take those via the iPad app. Can this be corrected? It's an important gap in what is otherwise an amazingly eased path to a ward picture directory.

Just filled out the survey and was surprised it was asking about things that clearly weren't part of LDS Tools. At the end, it took me to this link which indicated version 2.0 is now out. My current version 1.x doesn't give an option to upgrade or indicate there is an upgrade. I'll have to download this and take the survey again!

Who is an "administrator"? This sounds like a hold over from the old Ward Website; is it? Or, are certain ward leaders considered administrators? If so, which?
Justin K mentioned that, as a clerk, he can upload photos. I'd like to give our ward council a list of leaders who have this capability.
Thanks,
Brother Carroll

I found the answer to one of my own questions:

Quote:
Directory administrators for the ward include the bishopric, executive secretary, all clerks, and website administrator. From: https://tech.lds.org/blog/511-how-to-update-your-directory-photo

From the quote above, it appears that automatic uploads are turned on by default; however, from the quote below, it appears that this feature is turned off by default. Which is it?

In Settings, you can select that photos be automatically uploaded to the online directory. To set automatic uploading, click the Settings Settings button in the upper-right corner. Scroll down to Changing Photos Online and move the slider to Yes.

Thanks,

I've created a custom list with Individual's photos on on my Iphone. Is there a way to make that sync to my Ipad as well?

I am having problems with the Tools on my iPad all of a sudden. I am directed to enter my username and password to update it, but both are declined. I have checked my ID settings on the web page and find that I can still access the New Family Search . Any suggestions or ideas of why I am having this problem? O, before I forget, I have already removed and reloaded the thing form my iPad.

I updated my app on my iPhone 5 and and lost all of the data, my reports just come up blank. When I update I get an error also. I am a Bishop and I don't see the MRN either.

See this post -- tech.lds.org/blog/535-lds-tools-for-ios-temporarily-removed-from-app-store -- for some brief information about why LDS Tools was temporarily removed from the app store. Basically, there were performance issues. The team is fixing it. Sorry, that's all I know.
