QuestionDevan Green: Employee Spotlight

What is your current position at the Church and what are your responsibilities?

Answer

I am currently the business manager for infrastructure engineering. I work directly for Dave Prestwich, director of Infrastructure, to help run and improve foundational technology teams and processes. This area includes core technology around server hardware, operating systems, virtualization, directories, middleware, monitoring, backup/restore, desktop, messaging, and collaboration.

Question

What is one of the exciting projects that you are currently working on?

Answer

Before taking on the business manager role, I was a team manager for the team over Wintel, Netware, and VMWare. One key project we were working on, that I am still very excited about (although not directly driving), is VMWare. Engineering for the enterprise is more than just picking a product and turning it on. The challenges of our current project is taking leading edge technology and implementing it so that it is fully operational and supportable within our organization. By putting virtualization in place, we can provide better customer service, quicker service delivery and save time, money, power, and effort by eliminating wasted computing resources.

Question

What is your educational background and/or work experience?

Answer

My primary background is in programming. I started on a Commodore VIC 20 using an actual cassette tape as data storage (take that punch-cards). I received an undergraduate degree in computer science from Westminster a few years into my career. I spent many years as a consultant where I did programming, database design, security design, auditing, as well as network and firewall design and implementation. What I enjoy most is creative problem solving, whether it is for programming logic, interface design, or process creation and improvement.

Question

What or who has been an inspiration to you in your work?

Answer

I would say that Dave Prestwich and Brad Duncan are two big sources of inspiration for me. While they differ from each other in management style, personality, and point-of-view, they both have an endless appetite for identifying and solving problems. They put their heart and soul into their work. After a discussion with either one, I leave energized and inspired to tackle the next challenge. This holds true whether we are discussing work, church, or family life. I appreciate all the time I've been able to spend working with them.

Question

What is your favorite part of working at the Church?

Answer

First would be the people. There are great people here and it is fulfilling to work with those who are always setting the standard technically, personally, emotionally, and spiritually. The second would be the overall purpose - the mission of the Church. It is unique to have this one true purpose for our existence as an organization (I.T./ICS). We are not driven by revenue or commission. This allows people and teams to work together with open honesty. We are still human, so it's not perfect, but there is an underlying level of trust and cooperation that makes it really great to work here.

Question

What is one spiritual experience that you have had while working for the Church?

Answer

I remember one particular discussion that really stuck with me. I was working with Brad Beyeler, a database engineer, on the installation of a content management system. In an effort to complete on time, we were working late and got into a general discussion about life. As we talked, he shared his approach to work, church, and family. He explained how he believed that people are purposefully placed in your path at specific times, for specific reasons. He always looked for that reason and always found something great. I could see and feel that he had the sprit with him. He was truly content inside, and would be no matter the circumstances. I was really moved that day and it has stuck with me ever since. Brad is one of the great people working here at the Church and I enjoyed working with him. I find myself remembering this conversation and trying to take his approach when faced with a new situation.
